We’d gone about half a mile when a weird, heated breeze brushed against my cheek. “What was that?” I asked, swiping at my face.

“What?” Kai spun around. His skin glistened with sweat.

Another wisp of air touched my forehead, and then something scratched me.

“Ouch. Damn!” I touched the point above my left eyebrow. It was wet with blood. “Something scratched me.” I stopped and called upon my fire element. It was the most strengthened thanks to the sun.

“Shit,” Kai howled.

Three bloody gashes formed on his neck.

“Something invisible is stalking us,” I whispered, trying not to be afraid but unable to help myself. It was one thing to fight what I could see. Another to fight what I couldn’t.

Pain radiated from my shoulders, and I was lifted into the air before I understood what had happened.

“Kai,” I screamed, accidentally dropping the sword but trying to stab at whatever had me with the small knife.

At the same moment, Kai was lifted off the ground as well. Blood stained his shirt the same way I was sure mine was stained.

Kai growled and aimed the tip of his sword above his head, working to impale it. But whatever had him, and I wouldn’t let go.

And we were getting higher and higher. If the things that had us dropped us from such a height, we wouldn’t survive. Below, I saw that Thomas and Meredith were fighting while Nikko ran away from them.

“Nikko,” I shouted, but either she didn’t hear me, or she was too afraid to look around and see who’d called her name.
